Say hi to Dexter, our new Barn Kitty!
A lot has been happening at the barn lately. Many horses have placed in adoptive homes, and several have gone out for off-site training. Our on-site number of horses is now down to 50, however, many horses are currently at several off-site facilities that we are also caring for, so our staff and volunteers are stretched more now than ever before.
The Strep equi situation is becoming a non-issue. None of our horses are sick and all who have been tested over the last month have come back negative on both PCR and culture. The obstacle that we now have to tackle is figuring out who may be carrying the bacteria so we can fully eliminate the risk of a recurrence of the illness. This will take time and money, as scoping and treating every horse on our property is a drawn-out, expensive process. Decontamination stations are still in effect as you leave certain areas of the farm, so please still be aware of and use them as you exit our facilities. Tours are once again available to the public, and we welcome everyone to drop by and see our farm and horses. Tours are available between 9am and 4pm every day of the week.
YOUTH VOLUNTEERS MUST SIGN UP TO VOLUNTEER AT DEFHR THIS SUMMER. Parents, all volunteers under 18 years of age MUST sign up for the Legacy Program in order to volunteer during the week. More details on this program and how it works can be found at http://www.defhr.org/press/YouthProgram11.htm.
